Genius Hour #2 Reflection

My second Genius Hour presentation was about footballs (soccer balls) and the physics that affect them.
(Jarmoluk) I chose this topic because I am a big fan of football (like many Europeans) and I was really interested to know everything that affected the physics behind the ball like flight path and knuckleballs. When I played football I often wondered “What causes the ball to go this way” which is why I took my Genius Hour project as an opportunity to learn about the topic.

I learned many things through my research. All the different factors that affected how a ball behaves like the building method for example (gluing vs stitching). I found out that even the texture of the ball (smooth vs hard) can affect ball behavior drastically. I never knew there were so much different factors that played a role in how the ball flies or rolls and I was able to learn all these different factors through my research. I also learned different terms like knuckleballs, flight path, et cetera and what actually causes these. (Hall) All this research helped me grow as a person in many different ways. First of all, it helped my time management skills. In my first Genius Hour, I already talked about how Genius Hour helps my time management skills and I noticed they are now getting even better. Because I know this is a big assignment, I take precautions and finish everything on time which then helps me put it in practice with other assignments. It also helped me grow in the aspect of physics. I currently have physics as my science class and I learned a lot of different physics terms like momentum, terminal velocity and many more. This gave me a better understanding of physics helping me grow as a person and I hope will also help me in physics.

In the aspect of how my project has helped the community or the world around me, I would say my project was not very useful. But, in terms of myself, it has been very useful. When I practice shots for example, and I see the ball take a certain flight path I know say to myself “Oh, this must be caused by that”. (Ives) This is very useful because thanks to the information I have collected through my research, I can now analyze a shot and know what to do to give it a certain flight path or a certain effect like spin. My football skills have gotten better thanks to this project, as well as my knowledge about football and physics.

I do not know what I want to do for my next Genius Hour yet but to be able to impact the people around me more than the project I just finished I could do a more sensitizing project where I present information and have an actual impact, even if it just on the people in the class. A project more in the direction of my first Genius Hour would be better. My first Genius Hour was about media piracy, online especially, and I ended my presentation by telling people “Now you know the effects of media piracy, I can’t tell you to stop but next time, maybe think twice before”. This project had a greater impact on the people around me as I actually delivered a message, and my message was heard by people. (Krebs) This is why I think my third project should be directed more toward that path.

Twitter Expert Connect Reflection

For my Twitter Expert Connect assignment, I followed ten people. Here is the list: @Wisedad_games, I followed Wisedad Games because he is a video-game developer. I wanted to find out if even small video-game developers deal with issues like Copyright Infringement. @Pex, I followed Pex because Pex is a company that processes videos to spot copyright infringement on different platforms like YouTube. I figured I could get some data collected by the program they use to help me in my Genius Hour project. @copyrightuser, I followed Copyright User because it is a major online resource to document yourself about copyright infringement. I also knew that it was a very reliable source when it comes to copyright infringement. @RespectCreators, I followed Respect Creators because it is a caucus created to protect creators’ rights. In addition, as a caucus, their information is usually more reliable than other sources. @BSANoPiracy, I followed BSA No Piracy for their information about unregistered software. I knew there was a tight connection between unregistered software and copyright infringement so I was hoping to get more information about that. @authorsocieties, I followed Authors Societies because they are a major group fighting for the rights of creators in Europe. I found it important to have a wide range of information so I decided finding information about Europe would be a plus. @Bennetto90, I decided to follow Owen Bennett because he is an internet law and policy consultant. This professional background meant that he had knowledge about my topic, copyright infringement online. @AusAAM, I decided to follow AAM because it is an association that “brings together music managers, providing a peak body to address issues facing managers and their artists.” I thought it would be interesting to ask them questions because of their knowledge of the music industry. I wanted to know if as an association helping artists, had they ever witnessed copyright infringement. @lisa_lovell, I followed Lisa Lovell because she is the CEO of an anti-counterfeiting company. I thought it would be interesting to have a little bit of knowledge about copyright infringement, not just online, but also in real life. As her company fights counterfeiting, I concluded that she had some knowledge in the area. @Create_CC, I followed the Creative Coalition Campaign for their fight against online copyright infringement. It is based in the UK so I also thought that knowing more about copyright infringement in the UK would extend my knowledge.

These people relate to my project because all their knowledge relates to copyright infringement online. When searching for my experts, I was looking at Twitter bios and Tweets to find the people with information I judged most important. The result of this is that all of my experts have knowledge about something I wanted to know about copyright infringement. May it be indirect like the video-game developer, or may it be a direct link like the Creative Coalition Campaign, all of my experts relate to my topic in some way.

I asked them all very specific information. I asked @Wisedad_games if as a video-game developer he had witnessed any copyright infringement, and if not how would he act if one of his works were stolen. I asked @Pex on what platform they saw the most copyright infringement happening, as Pex processes a very large amount of videos all over the internet. I asked @copyrightuser what they thought was the most important copyright conference in the UK or worldwide. I asked @RespectCreators if they thought copyright infringement was getting better, or if it was still a big issue within the creative community. I asked @BSANoPiracy if unregistered software and cases caused by these were very common. I asked @authorsocieties what they thought was the most important reform to be addressed at the EU copyright reform. I asked @Bennetto90 if he thought that Net Neutrality would have a big impact on copyright infringement in the US, and if so why. I asked @AusAAM what they thought was the biggest flaw in our current music industry. I asked @lisa_lovell how her company helps in the fight against counterfeiting. Finally, I asked @Create_CC how copyright infringement was dealt with in the UK, and if the British creative community was greatly affected by it or not.

I asked these questions by staying polite. I first started by saying that I was asking these questions for a school project. I then proceeded to ask the question to my expert. Some good examples are the tweets I sent to @Wisedad_games and @Pex. “Hello, . I am doing a research project on copyright infringement, especially online. I wanted to ask, as a video game developer, have you ever experienced or witnessed your or someone’s work being used without permission? If so, how did you react/feel about it?” This shows the basic structure I talked about. I first introduce the reason why I am asking the question, then proceed to ask the question to the expert. “Hello . I am researching about copyright infringement online for a research project. As Pex processes an incredible amount of videos, on which platform do you think the most copyrighted work is used without permission.” Here again, you can identify the basic structure I use in my questions. Introduce the reason why you are asking the question, and then proceed to ask the question.

This information helps me in my Genius Hour project because it all relates to copyright infringement. All the information I was trying to obtain from my experts is information that is useful for my project and is additional information to help me in my project. When selecting my experts, I was also thinking about what information I needed. This helped me select my experts. Therefore, when asking my experts questions, I knew these were questions that were going to be useful to me in my project as I selected my experts to ask these questions.

The number of answers I got was pretty disappointing. I only got two answers out of ten. @Wisedad_games, and @Pex replied to the questions I asked them. Only @Wisedad_games followed me back on Twitter. I think the major problem in my Twitter Expert Connect assignment is that a lot of my experts were big associations, organizations, or even a caucus. These are less likely to reply than an individual expert. For example, the only person that replied to my Tweet and followed me back is a video-game developer/teacher and not a big organization.

The two experts that replied to my question gave me assistance and gave me additional information for my project but did not offer me more assistance than what I had asked for in my question. I did not continue the conversation with them except a reply to each saying thank you for the information they kindly gave me. Even though I did not continue the conversation, I think these two contacts would be useful for future information as they will probably remember me. Building these contacts is useful to continue the conversation in the future even though I did not in the present. Thanks to this project I also developed some skills that are essential to connecting with experts. All of these factors make this project useful for the future.

I really love P.E. I think so many people voted it because a lot of people like sports and a class where you do sports is appreciated by a lot of students. Also, I was surprised by Math’s score. Apparently, a lot of people like Math (I am not included). I honestly find Math very boring but I know it is important for us. Genius Hour Reflection Blog Post

What topic did you research in Genius Hour? For my Genius Hour presentation, I chose to research media piracy online, also referred to online copyright infringement. Why did you choose this topic? I chose this topic because technology has always interested me and I wanted to know more about a certain part of the internet. I chose media piracy specifically because it is something very widespread and is a major part of internet culture. I felt that researching it would make me understand more about how some people behave online.

What was your research question? My research question was: How does online media piracy affect the different industries? What did you learn? I learned a lot. To start, I learned all the different terminology like P2P (peer to peer) and other terms used in the context of my research. I then went on and researched about why people pirate (there sure are many reasons). In the last stage of my research, I tried to find out who was affected, how badly they were affected. For example how much money the software industry has lost so far. Quick fact: Did you know Game of Thrones was by far the most pirated show ever? (Noj, Clker, Grafikacesky. Assembled by me)

How did that help you grow as a person or a student? There are many aspects in which the project made me grow. First of all, I now know a lot of information about media piracy, and I also got a better understanding of copyright in a broader sense. This project also helped my time management. I am usually not a great person at time management but during this project, I noticed a great improvement in time management and getting my project due on time. Lastly, this project helped me grow my presenting skills. I learned to put only images on the slide, and have the script memorized.  Basically, give the audience something pretty to look at, while you tell a story. How did what you learn help (the world, community, animals, etc.) in some way? Explain. I do not think that my project helped very drastically. The main way it helped is by raising awareness to people about media piracy. Media piracy is very widespread and I know many people who pirate, this presentation helped them see the effects and do better choices.

How will what you learn in the next Genius Hour help the world, community, yourself, animals, etc. in some way? Explain. I am not exactly sure what I will do for my next Genius Hour but I do think there are many ways in which I could help things around me with my next topic. The most obvious way is by informing people, but I definitely think there are many ways I could help the world around me. For example, I thought instead of just giving out information, why not teach people how to do something. Everyone has their own knowledge in different subjects, and I think it would be good to teach people something instead of just forcing them to memorize facts and information. I think this is the main field in which I will help the world around me with my next Genius Hour project.

SBC 5 – If I were a principal for a week

First off I want to say that I am conscious these decisions are not the best but come on, they advantage me.

If I were the principal for a week I would change a lot of things, all to my advantage. First off I would let High-School students have a longer break. I mean like come on, 25 minutes to eat and do whatever else you have to do is not enough. What I haven’t thought of is what would we shorten to make that possible. It really doesn’t matter actually, I’ll just shorten the class after lunch. I would also create a rule where there is a limit of homework we can have, therefore teachers who want to give homework first have to check how much we already have. If it is too much, no homework in that class. I really don’t want to live through four essays (19 pages approximately) in addition to the usual homework for just one weekend.

In terms of food, there is just one thing I would change. I would allow students order from outside (like Yum-Yum for example). I know the argument is that our school has an outside business that has a contract with the school. Why forbid ordering just for that, I’m sure they can take a little bit of rivalry.

I am pretty sure that when the actual principal comes back in power (see how epic the word power sounds) he will change back things to normal. Even if it would last for only a week I think it would make a decent week.

SBC4 – Why you should become a Borussia Dortmund fan NOW

Since this week is free choice I decided to talk a little bit about football (soccer). My favorite football team is Borussia Dortmund.                       The team is from Dortmund, Germany and is in my opinion (you could easily argue but that’s not the point) the best team in the world. You should become a Dortmund fan NOW. We have world class players like Marco Reus, Aubameyang, or even Shinji Kagawa. Our goalkeeper, Roman Bürki, is a great goalkeeper. In addition, you will be mind blown by the fervor of the fans. The stadium even holds an attendance record as this quote from Wikipedia says: “It holds the European record for average fan attendance, set in the 2011–2012 season with almost 1.37 million spectators. Sales of annual season tickets amounted to 55,000 in 2015″. I know Wikipedia can sometimes be off but trust me on this one. In conclusion quit supporting the bad teams like Real Madrid or Barcelona, pfff who even supports them. Come join BvB (Dortmund) now because as our slogan says, we will offer you “echte liebe” (true love).

SBC3 – End My Story

It was a sunny morning, Jack had woken up early. He liked to go on the balcony of his cabin to feel the breeze. The ship he was on, the “Esperanza”, had just left the Dominican Republic and headed towards Kingston in Jamaica. The boat was advancing rapidly and the seagulls had a hard time catching up. The boat was not too big, about 200 people could fit. Jack had been on it for a week now, his trip would come to an end in Kingston where he would take a plane back to London Heathrow. Since Jack’s trip was soon over, he decided to enjoy the boat as much as possible. His friend Thomas and him had a rendezvous at the ping-pong table on the top deck. About an hour later, Jack and Thomas were playing a fierce game to define the winner. Suddenly the boat stopped abruptly. Jack looked what had happened, he could not believe what he saw. The boat hit a rock and was quickly sinking. He called Thomas;

“Thomas, hurry, to the safety boats.”

Jack and Thomas ran to the 2nd deck where the emergency boats were. Everyone was handed a lifejacket and was assigned different boats. The two friends were put with a family of four. Every boat was maneuvered by a crew member. The boats all headed towards the Haitian coast. The crew member on their boat was called Mauro, an Italian who was attracted by the thirst for adventure. He explained how he drove a boat in the rapids of the Amazon river, or how he saved a plane from a hijacking. The passengers of the boat were trying to figure out from which video-game he pulled these stories from. As Mauro went on with his stories, he didn’t seem to notice that the other boats were slowly disappearing. When the other boats had vanished, the father of the family asked

“Where did the boats go, we were supposed to follow them.”

Mauro looked at the GPS and realized he had drifted ending up heading to the continent. Realizing that they were halfway between where the boat sank and the continent and had almost run out of fuel Mauro announced;

“I suggest we stop on one of these deserts islands and from there reach someone with the radio. They anchored on a small island. They had selected it for its palm trees providing coconuts. Once on the island, Mauro tried reaching a nearby boat. He realized the radio did not work. They were not doomed to survive on this desert island. Within a few weeks conflicts started. The family had started fighting over the sharing of the food and the coconut water. Mauro had gone off into the small forest to explore the island. A week later Jack and Thomas had started fighting. Thomas’s portion of food went missing and he blamed Jack. A few more weeks passed by and Mauro had never come back, everyone was now tired of fighting and had split. One day, when the group was doing their routine, a ship passed by. They waved over and over again and suddenly the ship headed towards them. It was a small fisher ship. The ship brought them to a small island with a harbor from where they took a boat back to Haiti. On the ship back the group was wondering what they would become. How would they fit back into society after such a long time stranded on that island with the influence of violence?
